One person in their 30s was even like “let me google him”. Is it a generational thing?

Discussion Let’s talk about Xennial celebrities

Post image
62 Upvotes

I love finding out that a celebrity is my age and went to middle school and high school surrounded by all the pop culture I did. I was recently overjoyed to learn that I was born the same day as Sister Michael from Derry Girls. But sometimes I get a big inferiority complex with other celebs, like Lin Manuel Miranda, who was born 2 weeks later and then proceeded to overachieve his way through life. Other folks I’m happy to claim as one of ours: Claire Danes, Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, Van Lathan, Britney, fucking Beyoncé! Who are your favorites?

Discussion How many here were told 'go to college just to go to college' and you can figure it out from there? And did you?

I am trying to pinpoint when this piece of advice may have either originated or stopped being given because I got this in 2000 from my junior class counselor in high school. I feel like that was early enough, especially before 9/11, the whole Middle Eastern mess. Great financial crisis and covid that this advice would have still been valid then.

In this case, I would say that I did make it. However, it was at no point certain that I would during any of this and I know I got a few lucky breaks here, and there. In addition to having to go back to school for training in an entirely different career, however, I know that i'm in much better place than some people.

I have been lugging these overalls around for 30 years (Howwww?!?), and the day FINALLY came where I had a reason to pull these out of storage! I saved them when I was a teenager thinking my kid would get a kick out of them. Decided along the way that kids aren't for me, but still can't get rid of them.

These are from 96-97ish, along with the teletubby backpack (funny side note, my friends dad bought us these backpacks when he was in the UK. The show hadn't even aired yet in the US, we had never seen them before, and people were so bewildered by them). "Hug Dealer" Care Bears shirt and visor were bought new, but I am know my 16 year old self would whole heartedly approve. Even found my old YMCA Camp Counselor badge in the backpack 😄 I was obsessed with these overalls, and have debated throwing them on Poshmark or eBay, but will likely put them back in storage and pull them out in 30 more years!

The let-down of Halley's Comet in 1986

• Upvotes

Was going through a box of stuff I'd had packed away for about 30 years and found a couple of pieces of Halley's Comet merch from 1986. Made me think of how hyped up it was and that it ended up being the worst visibility of it in recorded history. I was a bit of an astronomy nut as a kid, so naturally I was disappointed. It ended up being just one of a series of disappointments that a lot of us late Gen X'ers experienced.

Anybody else remember the buildup and the let-down?

Discussion Do the days before modern tech feel like forever ago to you?

I'm talking the days before social media, smartphones, tablets, streaming movies and music. I could even go as far as to include the days before cell phones in general. Thinking back to when I didn't even have a cell phone let alone a smartphone, obviously no tablets or social media. Even pre-YouTube feels forever ago. Almost feels unreal.

Rescue 911 - What Story Stayed With You?

Post image
102 Upvotes

Fridays were for TGIF. Tuesdays were for Rescue 911 and Unsolved Mysteries.

Which Rescue 911 has stayed with you and made you extra cautious?

The two that I keep in the back of my mind, especially now that I'm a parent, are:

1) The one with the kid at beach digging a tunnel through a sand castle as it collapses on top of him.

2) A sister walks down the hall holding a knife incorrectly and stabs a sibling as she turns a corner.

You better believe my kids know how to carry sharp objects!
