AMA AMA: I'm Prof Ollie Jay, and I lead the Lancet Countdown’s work on the health impacts of climate change. I'll be answering your questions on 3 Nov at 7:30am EST / 13:30 CET.

The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change has just launched its 10th anniversary report, highlighting the latest evidence on how climate change is affecting human health around the world.
I’m Prof Ollie Jay, and I lead the Lancet Countdown’s work on the health hazards, exposures and impacts of climate change. Our work looks at how climate change is affecting:
- Extreme heat and heat exposure
- Heat-related labour loss
- Wildfire exposure
- The transmission of infectious diseases
- Drought, extreme rainfall, and food security
… and what these mean for our health.
I’ll be here to answer your questions about the findings of our latest report, what the evidence tells us about the health risks of climate change, and what can be done to protect people and communities.
Please submit your questions and join me on November 3 2026, from 07:30–09:30 EST / 13:30–15:30 CET when I'll be answering them.

Psychology People who favor science over religious dogma are surprisingly open to believing in ghosts and magic. These findings suggest that the modern shift toward rationality does not eliminate enchantment but redirects it away from organized institutions.

Psychology Men who blend emotional openness and progressive gender attitudes into their sense of manhood appear to be less reactive when their masculinity is called into question. Findings suggest that how men react to challenges to their gender status depends in part on how they define manhood for themselves.

Health Splitting a workout into 3 quick 1-minute sets of 20 squats spread across the day built about the same strength as doing all 60 squats in one go, an 8-week study of 45 young weight lifters found. The bonus: people who did these bite-sized 'exercise snacks' actually enjoyed their workouts a lot more.

Economics Store robberies are passed through to consumers in the form of higher prices. In the aftermath of a robbery or burglary, prices at victimized stores are 1.7-1.8% higher and 1.5% higher at nearby stores. Crime results in a substantial "hidden" tax, primarily born by consumers.
aeaweb.orgPsychology People in interracial relationships tend to be more politically liberal, a US study of 12,600 young adults finds. They had 37% higher odds of liberal views. The link is stronger for women and unmarried people, but it's unclear if dating across races shifts politics or liberals just date more widely.

Economics The rural-urban political divide is rooted in protectionism and uncompetitive agriculture. The divide is negligible in regions with a comparative advantage in agriculture. Rural voters support protectionist parties and policies when the local agriculture is uncompetitive.

Neuroscience Your brain quietly gets rid of billions of faulty neurons around the time you are born: scientists studied over 2,300 brain cells and found over 1 in 4 neurons in fetuses had huge chunks of chromosomes missing or duplicated, but only about 6% did after birth, so only the healthiest ones get to stay.

Psychology Very religious Americans read the Bible's message on helping the poor differently depending on their income: those earning under $50k say it means building a fairer society, while those earning $100k+ say it means personal charity. Among less religious people, income made no real difference.
