Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

I had chromeOS on my hp chromebook 11 g8 ee but it was running badly since I had linux enabled (Ubuntu) I switched to Linux Mint XFCE because its efficient on low end devices but the switch over was too much for me so I tried to go back to ChromeOS except I deleted Linux Mint XFCE and I dont have ChromeOS now my laptop is OSless 😭. When I try to get in it says "ChromeOS is missing or damaged. Please remove all conected devices and start recovery. I dont have another device with admin privileges so I cant use Rufus or Device Utility Recoverry but I do have a 32gb flash drive. How do I get chromeOS back? I AM NOT ASKING TO CHANGE FROM CHROMEOS TO OTHER OS, IM JUST ASKING HOW TO GET CHROMEOS BACK.

Linux (Crostini) I need help with an error

Ok, so when I try to connect my iPhone to my Chromebook via usb, it just shoots back “no device found”. I do the “trust computer” prompt, and all the usb commands, and no matter what, the device is never found. I’d like to know what I’m doing wrong and how to fix it. (This is all happening within the penguin terminal)

Discussion 3 days to decide...

Hey folks i got 3 days in my return window for this cx54 expertbook Intel I5,16gb 1tb.

I'm hoping for some hardcore users to make the case for me to hold on to the device. For me the laptop is very nice with all it's bells and whistles, for the price I paid for it. My current gripes right now are having to search out apps that do work. Like I understand this cx54 won't work for me dealing with Lightburn and my Falcon 2 laser engraver (that doesn't have wi-fi). Also of the Linux apps I have installed, I'm learning I always have to have the terminal app running. If not the app just hangs there because no terminal handshake.

So of people who do besides basic web searching, video streaming, and such... please make the case for me because I'm afraid I'll have to return it. Thank you.

Troubleshooting HP Color Laser MFP 178nw Chromebook - driverless setup with custom PPD

The gist is this. Add the printer manually over IPP, with the printer's IP address and queue ipp/print. Skip the LaserJet and PCL drivers, since the 178nw doesn't speak those. Then upload a custom PPD (ask Claude) that uses the URF format. A PWG Raster version just printed a page saying "RaS2", but the URF version worked... Good luck!

Troubleshooting Boot loop on Chromebook?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I think im having booting issues on my Chromebook its the model C423NA-BV0158. Whenever I try to power it up it always flashes like its about to boot up but doesn’t and goes to black and repeats.

I’ve tried multiple things like using refresh key + power key and it makes the light beside my charging port turn from orange to white for a few seconds and then back to orange. I’ve also tried to use the recovery menu which works perfectly fine no flashing etc, and finished the process successfully. However, during the recovery process in the Device recovery utility I picked the “ASUS Chromebook C423” option and didnt see other options which matched my model but during the recovery process it said“you are using an out of date official chrome OS recovery image, recovery will continue because verification was turned off, if verification is turned on later you will need to repeat recovery with an up to date chrome OS image” but im still having the same booting issues even after finishing the whole recovery process, so im a bit lost when it comes to that and how to get the up to date version if that helps at all in fixing the issue.

Any help at all would be appreciated !

Troubleshooting Galaxy Chromebook update stuck at ChromeOS logo until Refresh+Power

I've never had this happen but tonight after a normal stable channel update, it just sat at the ChromeOS logo.. I left it alone for 10+ minutes, sometimes it takes 5-10s, but I didn't want to interrupt it either. Long-pressed power to power off, waited, powered on... Waited. Tried again, nothing. Googled, tried Refresh + Power and that worked.

I'm not seeing anything wrong after, but, anyone have a guess why this would happen?

Troubleshooting Weird pixel thing

Hello guys! I have a Chromebook 3100 that I got from my highschool that ive had about 4 years now. Its recently had these weird dark pixels at the top and edges that have came and went a couple times. I think it may be a pressure thing but im not sure how to fix this because they only seem to go away over time. Ive tried the stuck pixel things and the microfiber cloth method but those dont work either. I am hoping this thing gets me through college as it got me through highschool cuz I am extremely poor and I dont have enough money for a new laptop. Please lmk what I can do to fix this! Thank you!

Buying Advice Chromebook plus 14 new models?

(Australian Based)

Hello,

I posted a while ago that a Lenovo sales rep let me know they would discontinue Chromebooks in the future…I get the vibe they were indeed but were also switching to the new GoogleBooks.

Our standard issue laptop at our company is the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 but going off that information and after talking to a retails sales rep who let me know its highly likely they will no longer have this model stocked again, Im a little unsure whats the next best thing to start getting for our staff.

This laptop is great but moving onto the new GoogleBook doesn’t make sense with the price jump being a few hundred dollars and going above $2,000 especially since during the year these regularly dropped to around $700-800.

So yeah, would anyone have any ideas of a ChromeOS laptop on par with this?

Discussion Is there a way to download and have functional apps/programs also available in guest mode?

I work for an afterschool program and our chromebooks are passed around each day between different classes. I want to start a digital arts program but I need a way to be able to download the software and have it be accessible in the Guest Mode. I like that the memory is wiped after each session so students can use their USB’s for saved data. Is this possible?

I tried making a generic Lab account but one of the classes that uses the Chromebook has young kids, who clicked and signed up for every ad/email pop up on sight and created accounts in god knows where.

Linux (Crostini) Anyone using Linux Chrome on a Pixelbook Go? How well does it run?

I have a i5 Pixelbook Go, and since ChromeOS updates end in June 2029, I'm thinking of using the Linux version of Chrome through Crostini to keep the laptops up to date with modern chrome. Has anyone tried this?

How does it compare to regular Chrome in terms of speed, RAM usage, battery life, and video playback?

Are there any issues with using it as your main browser? Would i be better off using Linux Firefox instead?

Buying Advice My chrome os is too outdated

Post image
40 Upvotes

So as specified by the title, my Chrome Os in the chrome book is clearly old being Version 77.0.3865.120 (Official Build) (32-bit) and I want two things, to somehow update it and somehow get Google play store on it, because for some reason this laptop doesn't have google play store installed. I go to update it, it says "you have a metered wifi, update manually" I click on "check for updates" it says "your Chromebook is up to date" but it clearly isn't, can't download extensions, apps. Nothing except images and pdf files. I hope someone knows how to deal with such an odd and insanely specific situation, also thanks to anyone who's going to potentially respond or attempt to help me.

Troubleshooting I'm thinking this isn't just a display issue ..

Post image
6 Upvotes

Asus Flip CX5. Recently developed an issue where after a period of use, this bar of flickering lines appears. It will gradually get worse, the cursor becomes harder to operate, and shortly thereafter it's completely inoperable.

I attempted a power wash but then it wouldn't reboot. I ended up having to recover from a USB. It is now usable, but still very problematic.

-The issue begins after a period of continuous use, could be from a few minutes to an hour. As before recovery, it gradually gets worse and harder to use before becoming entirely useless.

-Unlike before, rebooting or letting the computer sleep for a while will stop it (until it starts again)

-Weirdly, when the problem first starts I can make it go away by opening Gmail or settings full screen. Eventually this doesn't work either though.

I'm guessing this is an expensive problem rather than just a display connection or something.. so I'm trying to do the math on a very plasticky device with only a couple years of updates left. Has anyone else experienced something like this?
